Minocqua, Oneida and Vilas Counties

Oneida and Vilas Counties are located in north central Wisconsin and are well known vacation areas.

We began our visit to the area with lunch at the Thirsty Whale in Minocqua.

The Bearskin trail, a former railroad corridor that runs from Minocqua to Tomahawk, is right behind the restaurant. The trail follows an old spur of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad (the Milwaukee Road) built from New Lisbon to Minocqua in 1887 to haul logs and lumber. We walked over the longest trestle on the trail, 375 feet long spanning Minocqua Lake, before moving on.

Fall colors were at their peak.

We checked out Rustic Road #60 in Vilas County.

Next we visited Little Bohemia Lodge in Manitowish Waters, site of the 1934 shootout between John Dillinger and G-men. Read more about it here.

We finished the day with drives on Rustic Roads 58 and 59 in Oneida County.
